Participating while currently active duty
« on: December 14, 2014, 07:54:32 PM »
Hows it going gents.

My name is Blue and I would like to know about gaming while during active duty. Currently i am a airmen in the United States Navy. I am in training to be an air traffic controller. I would like to know if anyone is currently active duty and how it is trying to be involved in this community and doing your duties at the same time. Obviously my job comes first but if I can I would like to get involved somehow. If anyone is active duty and could let me know how it is that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys hope to see you in the field someday.

It's not hard. obviously work comes first. as with any other job you will have to miss things on occasion. not really a big deal, people understand.

You're allowed a little bit more leeway when it comes to the reserves requirements, however you need to meet the minimum expectations in order to stay active. There's going to be times where you will have to step down, and it's best to do it willingly rather than have someone else force you to reserves.

While real life does come first, after a certain point(usually when you've hit less then 50ish% attendance to required events) we do sit down with you and usually ask you to go to reserves. Reserves isn't purgatory, it's where members go to for spans of time when they can't meet the minimum we ask for and come out of reserves when they can commit fully again.

So let's say I go on deployment. I can go on reserves until I get back ?

Absolutely. Just make a note in your reserves transfer that informs everyone you are going to be on deployment.

Generally the only time you won't have time available is deployment - no personal internet on the boats (ships for you extra salty guys). Shore Duty and OPDET Night check is also gonna pose a problem for training purposes, but weekends will generally be yours, unless you're on duty and have a late watch to stand.

Same as any other job. The military has yet to impact my experience with the unit in a negative way. Both have complemented eachother well. Only time it is an issue is when you have duty or something. Now you being in school may make things difficult because the time you are give to do what you want is limited but you should be fine.

After about 1600 everyday and on weekends I'm free except on my duty days. So I'm thinking I'll be alright unless the 506th holds events in the morning.
