Need a new monitor
« on: July 16, 2020, 07:14:28 PM »
Soliciting recommendations for a new monitor, 28" max (I like being able to see the whole screen without moving my head around too much), 4K; 144Hz.

Firm believer in "you get what you pay for" so okay with dropping some dough on this but not looking to break the bank.

Do you require 4k 144hz? I personally use 1080p 165hz. I have never been able to fully deduce the benefits from 4k visuals on a computer unless you sit far away from your monitor. Not to mention price.

The MSI G27C4 is a 27 inch 165hz monitor for just over 200 dollars. They arent in stock right now so if you need a backup IMMEDIATELY, go for the Acer XFA240, at 24 inches and 144hz for 200 even. Both budget, both high refresh rates, and as long as you have the tower to pair well with it (you should given you wanted 4k to begin with), you can have some of the smoothest gameplay you have ever seen.

1440p 144hz hits the sweetspot for gaming rn, 4k, at that size at least, is overkill.

If you are getting this for anything but gaming 144hz is almost useless. One your computer needs to be able to give you atleast your hz rating in FPS or you are not getting the full useage of the monitor. Also the human eye will not tell a difference in 85hz or 144hz in games such as arma in which you will never see the FPS push close to the refresh rating.

Rant over about the fact that companies use bigger numbers to get us to pay more. I have been beyond happy with my ASUS VE278Q, I have it more for the color aspect as I am an Architectural Designer (architect without his license yet). It is the nice balance of gaming capabilities and design work benefits.

Yep this is why I asked, I figured you peeps knew much more about monitors than I - thanks for all the info, I'll consider all when making a selection!
