Economic Crisis in Erzikistan
International Times - Dateline 03APR16

A scenic shot of a rural area of Erzikistan.

Tonight, International Times brings you news out of Erzikistan, where Alex McCormick is reporting troubling news concerning the economy of a country that has been systematically weakened by the global financial crisis.

Erzikistan represented on a map.

In the past few weeks, the Erzikistani unemployment rate has skyrocketed to 20% and the markets have closed at losses consecutively for 4 weeks now.  Questions have been raised as to recent decisions in the government to reduce funding to NATO in an effort to help stabilize the markets.  These cuts, among others such as defense budget cuts, military pay cuts, and pay decreases for most low functioning government employees has shown the dire situation at hand in Erzikistan.  Rumors that started circulating a few weeks ago have now been confirmed that Erzikistan has struck an energy deal with Iran, going against the wishes of NATO, and allowing the transportation of energy through its own borders.  If these rumors are true, it would be a political nightmare for Erzikistan, and the ramifications from NATO would mean more sanctions against the already frail country.

The next few weeks will be critical to the weakened country, as tensions are very high.  The people are not happy with the current situation, and unless a solution is found, this situation has the potential to spiral out of control.  If the economy of Erzikistan collapses, the consequences could be felt worldwide.

We will continue to monitor the situation as officials have gathered to discuss measures to strengthen the weakened economy in some way.  This geopolitical hotspot has caught the attention of many, and we here at International Times will continue to update you with the latest information.
