SUBJECT: (C) THE KINGDOM OF SAHRANI

SITUATION: (C) TENSIONS ESCALATE AMID ROYAL FAMILY DEATH

ANALYST COMMENT: (C) With the death of Queen Harriet (29) the Kingdom of Sahrani is now embroiled in what observers are calling a succession crisis. After battling brain cancer for two years the long-lived monarch leaves Princess (Now Queen) Harriet II as heir to the throne. She was very much beloved in the nation after a failed rebellion against her by her brother Prince Orlando. However citizens in the north of the country (Formerly the Democratic Republic of Sahrani) blame her for numerous human rights violations during the conflict directed against combatants and noncombatants alike. The RACS denies the allegations.

In the Parliament of Sahrani ultra-left leaning MP’s are calling for a new constitution, to do away with the established royal family’s influence and official duties. Currently the left-leaning Democracia Party controls thirteen of the thirty-five seats in the Parliament, while the conservative Realistas Party controls sixteen seats and the rest are controlled by a local Green Party (Los Verdes Party) that is in a coalition with the Realistas.

Strife had abated in recent years after the initial decade of unrest following the 2006 North vs South war between the DRS and KOS. American forces intervened and decisively turned the tide against the Sahrani Liberation Army, and the communist dictatorship fell and the Northern part of the island was absorbed into the Kingdom of Sahrani. In the past two years however, ultra-left leaning MP’s have caused controversy, publicly violating existing libel laws against speaking against the royal family and lately have called for the abandonment of the royal family as an institution. Fights have broken out on the Parliament floor, and protests have been more common and more violent.

“How long will we cling to allowing spoiled brats to rule this country with equal treatment when they believe they are better than us because they are born? It is 2018! How long will we let this fallacy continue?” MP Maria Gomez said to a crowd in her home district.

So far there have been no motions in Parliament to rewrite the constitution. But several MP’s are demanding the removal of the current one for a new one. The royal family stated that it is reviewing disciplinary action against the MP’s who are violating the statutes against inflammatory language and libel.
