Title: Grenadier tips/training?
Post by: SFC (Ret) Lyon on April 16, 2015, 06:29:31 PM
My gut tells me that becoming a proficient grenadier is simply about practice, practice, practice but if anyone could suggest a good video or text tutorial, or just provide some basic tips for an ARMA newb who's scared of using the grenade launcher for fear of blowing up the wrong people?

Best way to practice on your own time, is to hop into the game editor. The default keys Page Up and Page Down will cycle through the ranging on the M320 sight. Spawn some things (people, cars, etc), range them with a rangefinder/Vector, and then start sending 40MM down range. More you use it, more comfortable you'll be, and the more accurate you'll become.

Another good skill is to be able to estimate range by eyeballing it. Most of the time when engaged you won't have the luxury of pulling out rangefinders. Just spawn things in at random distances and try and guess the distance before ranging it. After some practice you should start getting pretty accurate

The advantage of the M320 system is that it's pretty easy to use. It has a leaf-sight, which is ranged for 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, and 350 meters.

As for ranging a target, though, I would advise trying to range the target using your rifle's sights before switching over to the grenade launcher unless you are danger close. Usually, that's a pretty efficient way to guesstimate how far away a target is.

This was actually going to be my follow-up question.  Do experienced grenadiers still use the sights/range adjust or can I expect to eventually be able to eyeball it - so yeah I will now practice practice practice.

(reason I ask all this is 'cause I've seen how effective a grenade launcher can be in the hands of someone who knows how to use it watching Capt. Drumheller's vids and hope to someday be as proficient as he is)

I still use a rangefinder when I can because it restricts any human error, but, there are a lot of times where you'll come into contact and just by it's nature can't risk putting your rifle away. If you have a sight that helps you measure distance use that as just eyeballing takes a lot of practice and may still require a ranging shot

A good team leader will do their best to acquire ranges in combat situations, and call out ranges so that the Automatic Rifleman and Grenadier can put effective rounds on target.
