Avast! is what I use for personal use (business has the paid version), in conjunction with Malwarebytes (also free for personal use, paid for business/personal use with more auto-type features).

The built in Windows Defender is actually very good, and many people overlook it because it's Microsoft. It's a very strong program when dealing with malware/spyware, which is what the majority of infections are these days (due to their ease of infection).

Of course, the best anti-virus program out there, is oneself. Don't download things that auto-prompt. Don't click on spam email links. Actually read what's in the installer when you've downloaded legitimate software (a lot of shady stuff is built into the installer). Be mindful of where you're downloading programs from. Essentially, educate oneself, as a great majority of the spyware/malware these days that infect people's computers are do to the user.

CPL Nelson said pretty much exactly what I was about to tell you. Avast and Malwarebytes are gold, I've only had a virus once or twice in the past 6 years.

I've had a lot of different programs from Avast, Malwarebytes, Norton, Mcafee.

I didn't have any issues with any of them and have used them for over 10years Norton is what I am currently using as well as a laptop with Mcafee.

EDIT;

As long as you pay attention to details about what you are doing online and where you download from etc... you should be safe with anything really in most cases of a virus being given to a users PC it boils down to a poor judgement of the user.

I run solely, Windows Security Essentials and the odd Malware bytes scan. Never had a worry and never had a virus. This obviously depends on how sound your're when it comes to what you browse and download.

I have a subscription with Malwarebytes. I agree with everyone else though that you are the best anti-virus program.
