Title: FPS gaming with controller
Post by: D. Santiago on November 01, 2016, 02:09:31 PM
I'm fairly new to PC gaming. As a matter of fact, Arma 3 is the first shooter I've played with mouse and keyboard. Most of my life been playing console, and been playing shooters on multiplayer since CoD 4 (best CoD imo).

Now, I'm in no way considering on playing Arma with a controller. I just bought BF1 and even though I'm getting used to playing it with M&K, it just feels awkward, and I keep getting my ass handed to me. Something that barely ever happened on BF4 on Xbox one.

Everyone always says mouse and keyboard is always the best choice for PC shooters. Just wanted to ask you guys opinion, because I don't know if I should just give myself time to get used to it or go with a controller.

The main thing you should know when playing on games like Arma and BF1 is to make sure your sensitivity on your mouse is correctly configured for your movement. I was in the same position as you a year ago. I can admit I sucked with a mouse & keyboard. I believe over time you will just get better. Here is a video that could help you with understanding how the mouse works and a proper guide on setting up your mouse sensitivity.

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. My first console was an NES and ever since then I always was attached to my very basic console controls with only a few buttons to push. I had a Gamboy for a while before the Xbox 360 finally came out and I got that. All my teenage years I've played 360 up until Arma 3 caught my attention and I got a laptop. My first year owning Arma 3, I sucked at playing because I hadn't played on M&K since I was a kid and my dad let me play Medal of Honor Allied Assault or Command and Conquer Renegade. Arma 3 was really bugged, I wasn't a fan of the difficulty (coming out of CoD and BF4 on 360), I wasn't familiar with M&K controls, and I didn't know anything about modding at the time so Arma lost its luster for a while and I went back to my 360.

It wasn't until I found the 506th that I actually got back into playing Arma again. I liked all the mods and new features that came in recent updates as well as some of the DLC content. I joined the 506th and learned about the roleplaying and realism experience. This all forced me to become more familiar with M&K than I used to be.

Now for me it just depends on the tempo of the game. Games such as Arma 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 are very high tempo games when you get into the thick of things and I like using the M&K to keep up snappy movements and customize my keybinding where I like them. However on games such as Far Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid V, GTA V, Skyrim and Fallout 4, I get my 360 controller and plug it into my computer because they're more simple games that I can play with only a controller and I like the slower, more fluid motions that the joystick of my controller provides allowing for a more subtle and smooth gameplay experience.

NOPE! I tried and just can't, I'm switching to controller for BF1, lol. Tired of getting my ass handed to me like this.

The only way to get good with m&k is practice. Once you get good your reactions and precision will be much better than a controller ever could be.

I think the BF series still uses assisted aiming for controllers, but I might be wrong..

It takes awhile to get used to keyboard & mouse. One does not simply acquire mass amounts of skill from immediately switching from a controller to M&K.

I've been playing computer games since mid 90s. All kinds from RTS to MMO to Sims to FPS and literally everything else in between. I'm not gonna boast about skill but honestly I'm at the point where any FPS game I get into, I immediately do well as far as aiming and movement goes. It just takes times, you can't develop amazing skills with a whole new piece of hardware overnight.

To be honest, you're probably still going to get your ass handed to you if you use a controller vs someone with M&K. Typically what happens.

I guess all of you are correct. Majority rules after all, lol. I'll quit my whining and keep playing with m&k. Really appreciate it guys.
