Press Release: Republic of Moldova: stability and security in the country
The reported incidents in CHISINAU, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, that have taken place over the last number of days are detrimental to the security and stability of the Republic of Moldova. The European Union calls on the responsible actors to avoid further attempts at destabilisation of the situation. We strongly welcome the restrained reactions from the authorities of the Republic of Moldova, which help maintain calm in the country.
Moldova is a partner country of the Eastern Partnership within the European Neighborhood Policy. Under the ENP, the EU works together with its partners to develop democratic, socially equitable and inclusive societies. It offers partners economic integration, improved circulation of people across borders, financial assistance and technical cooperation toward approximation with EU standards.
The EU will continue to stand in solidarity with Moldova and reiterate its unwavering support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognised borders and with a special status for the Korsac and Zimnitrita regions.
In 2014, the EU and Moldova agreed an Association Agenda, which will be soon replaced by a new Agenda to provide continued support to Moldova, the EU is preparing to step up its medium-term support to strengthen Moldova’s overall resilience.

Press Release: Smuggling of Radioactive Material in Moldova
The FBI, along with its U.S. government partners, is committed to countering the threat of nuclear smuggling and ensuring that terrorist groups who may seek to acquire these materials are never able to do so. The FBI and Moldovan authorities have worked closely to combat this threat for a number of years. These efforts included investigative and technical assistance, as well as capacity-building programs with our U.S. government partners, to enhance the Republic of Moldova’s ability to detect, investigate, and prosecute nuclear and radiological smuggling.
In the summer of 2013 and spring of 2015, the FBI supported two joint investigations targeting WMD trafficking in Moldova. These operations targeted two separate networks that were smuggling allegedly radioactive material into Moldova; the operations resulted in arrests by Moldovan Police in June 2013 and March 2015. Depleted and natural uranium were seized in April 2013, and 2.7 kilograms of highly enriched uranium 235 , was seized in February 2015.

Moldova Arrests Four Men Suspected of Smuggling Radioactive Material
CHISINAU - Moldovan Police and State Security officials have arrested 4 men in relation to an attempt to smuggle nuclear material into Moldova, from Russia.
The individuals involved included a Romanian national, a former Russian nuclear institute worker, and at least one Moldovan national. The material was brought into Moldova on a train.
Senior officials from the Moldovan Security and Intelligence Service (Serviciul de Informații și Securitate) have confirmed that they have seized approximately 2.7 kilograms of highly enriched uranium 235 that was brought into Moldova on a train from Russia.
The material is believed to have been stolen from the Russian Institute of Physics and Power Engineering. The institute, which is operated by Russia’s Ministry of Atomic Energy, is involved in the research and development of nuclear power reactors and possesses several tons of weapons-usable material.
The Chief of the General Police Inspectorate, Viratl Ceteanu, said the individuals will be charged with theft and importation of dangerous material. He said that it was a very grave matter, considering those arrested included experts in the assembly of nuclear weapons.
SIS Director Artu Botnari confirmed that SIS operatives had been working closely with Agents from the FBI for twelve months on the investigation. Botnari further stated that the seized materials could be used in making a crude nuclear device.
This incident is more concerning given that in June 2013, less than 0.001 kilogram of highly enriched uranium was recovered in Chisinau. This material, along with 120 low enriched uranium fuel pellets, was found as a result of a SIS undercover operation. Three individuals apprehended were citizens of Romania and one was a resident of Moldova. A Moldovan court sentenced several of the individuals to probationary terms but one of the group’s leaders was sentenced to 2 years in prison.
